The term “Bichon” typically refers to a group of small dog breeds known for their fluffy coats and cheerful dispositions. But did you know that there are four different types of Bichon breeds? Each one has its own unique characteristics, history, and personality.

The four Bichon varieties are:

  1. Bichon Frise
  2. Havanese
  3. Bolognese
  4. Maltese

Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is perhaps the most well-known and famous variety of Bichon. The name means “curly lap dog” in French, which describes their appearance perfectly.

They have a soft, curly white coat that requires regular grooming and trimming. They are small, usually weighing between 10 to 20 pounds, and have a cheerful and playful temperament.

They are very affectionate and love to be around people. They are also intelligent and easy to train but can be stubborn and bark a lot. They need moderate exercise and socialization to prevent boredom and separation anxiety.

This variety originated in Cuba, where they were bred as companion dogs for the wealthy. Havanese have a silky, wavy coat that can come in many colors, such as white, black, brown, cream, silver, or red. They are slightly larger than the Bichon Frise, weighing between 10 to 15 pounds.

They are very loyal and devoted to their owners, making excellent watchdogs. They are also very smart and eager to please but can be sensitive and shy around strangers.

They need regular grooming and brushing to prevent mats and tangles in their coat. They also require moderate exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy.

Bichon Bolognese

The Bolognese variety originated in Italy, where they were favored by the nobility and royalty. They have a fluffy, white coat that forms ringlets or cords. Similar in size to the Bichon Havanese, they weigh between 8 to 14 pounds.

They are very calm and gentle dogs who enjoy being pampered and cuddled. They are also very obedient and loyal to their owners but can be aloof and reserved with strangers.

Regular grooming and bathing are necessary to keep their coat clean and fluffy. They also require low to moderate exercise and socialization to prevent loneliness and boredom.

Bichon Maltese

While not always considered part of the Bichon group, the Maltese shares many characteristics with Bichon breeds and is often included in discussions about them.

This variety originated in Malta, where they were bred as lap dogs for the aristocracy. They have a long, silky white coat that reaches the ground. They are the smallest of the Bichon varieties, weighing between 4 to 8 pounds.

Maltese Bichons are very elegant and graceful dogs with a sweet and gentle personality. They are also very affectionate and lively, loving to play with toys and people. They are very intelligent and trainable but can be stubborn and vocal.

Regular grooming and brushing are needed to prevent mats and knots in their coat. They also require low to moderate exercise and socialization to prevent anxiety and aggression.
